Text Box: racism is a result of individuals who are very narrow minded in their thinking, and also very narrow minded in their life experiences. When people are narrow minded in any shape or form, they are unable to really see what they’re looking at, therefore, they only see what they want to see.
We asked him how he handles students who say racist things in class or around school and he said “I confront them and explain to them how those remarks are not in their best interest...”
Text Box: Do you ever hear or wonder if there are problems that have to do with racism on our campus? Well, even though it seems like there aren’t, there are. We asked Mrs. Chavez if she has ever had to deal with problems that have to do with racism and she said that she has had about 3 or 4. There are some problems that involve the teacher saying something that a student didn’t like and the student takes it the wrong way. They try to handle the problems really sensitively and they give them an opportunity to talk to them. “Sometimes when someone feels different they start thinking that they’re being talked about,” Mrs. Chavez says. Even though it does come up once in a while, it’s not a major problem.
Mr. Goss has some deeply-felt opinions on racism. He said that Text Box: We also asked him about any personal experiences that he has had with racism. He told us “I moved from San Pedro to Compton in 1953. At that time Compton was all white and I was one of the three black kids in the school. The white children called me a monkey and told me that I couldn’t afford soap. I ran to my father and told him the things that the kids were telling me and my wise father told me ‘Are you a monkey?! Is it true that you can’t afford soap?!’ and I said ‘No daddy?!’ So remember, racism affects the person being told racist things, and the person who says racist things looks bad too.
